A history of the first major battle of the war, in November, 1965. A battalion of the 7th Cavalry was dropped by helicopter into Landing Zone X-Ray, near the Cambodian border near a much larger concentration of North Vietnam troops. For three days, the two armies fought before the North Vietnamese backed off, only to attack another 7th Cavalry battalion near Landing Zone Albany two days later and cause many more casualties. Between the two battles, the U.S. troops had 305 killed and more than that wounded while killing approximately 3,500 enemy troops.

Review - We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young

Well-written and moving. The battle, and the war, were ugly, sad and pointless. The author was the commanding officer of the battle at LZ X-Ray. He ends the book with a short but convincing discussion on all the high-level mistakes the U.S. made that resulted in the death of so many men for no purpose.
