Notes:Subtitle: The American Soldier in Combat at Bunker Hill, Gettysburg, and Iwo Jima

The author uses diaries, letters, and memoirs to explain the experience of the common soldier during three ages of American wars—including combat, survival, and medical treatment. He concludes that, while the experience of battle might have been similar, the way individual soldiers thought about battle has changed—from one of doing ones duty, to a quest for self-fulfillment, to war as a job to be done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Review - Men of War

The author seems to wander off track from time to time, particularly when describing Bunker Hill, probably because there were a lot fewer participants who left a lot fewer accounts. But it was interesting, if gross, throughout.
