The author drove the length of U.S. 40 from Atlantic City, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California, twice during the early 1950's, taking photos and exploring local history. The book traces the route, with photos describing the history of the road itself and also any interesting features of the natural and man-made landscape that appear in the photo.

Review - U.S. 40

It got somewhat boring and repetitive toward the end—maybe I read it too fast. But black-and-white photos of deserts are just not that thrilling. The book was most interesting to me personally in the part that covered central Pennsylvania to St. Louis, and then Colorado, because I'm familiar with those parts of the country, although U.S. 40, to the extent that it still exists, has been superseded by I-70 along those parts of the route. Still, it was interesting seeing the state of transportation five to eight years before I was born.
