Notes:Richard Carvel grew up as the heir to an estate in Maryland before the Revolutionary War. From the first, his sympathies were with the Colonies. His friend Dorothy Manners was the love of his life, but her beauty intimidated him and made her the favorite of many men. Dorothy's scheming father took her to London to marry her to nobility. Richard's uncle, who wanted the estate, conspired to have Richard kidnapped and killed. Instead, he ended up on a slaver that was defeated by John Paul Jones, who rescued and befriended Richard. He met Dorothy again in London, but she was promised to a disgusting Duke by her father. Richard fought a duel with the man and was injured but prevented the marriage. Richard's grandfather back in Maryland died and Richard's uncle took of his estate. Richard went home but was forced to work for a neighbor. He was part of the patriots who led Maryland in the Revolution and signed up for service on John Paul Jones' ship. He was injured in the battle with the Serapis and sneaked into London to be cared for by Dorothy. After the war, they finally marry and go back to Maryland where Richard's estate had been restored to him.

Review - Richard Carvel

When the story was about Richard and Dorothy and their lives, it was an exciting, fun read. When the author tried to fold John Paul Jones and several other famous Englishmen and Americans in to the story, it got dull.
