Notes:Subtitle: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex.

On November 20, 1820, the Essex was rammed by a sperm whale and sunk in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The crew took to the open in whale boats and attempted to sail 5,000 miles to the South American coast. The journey didn't go well — several of the crew members were eaten by their shipmates — and only eight lived to tell the story. The adventure inspired Melville to write Moby Dick.
