Notes:In 1953, Reverend Roger Hargreaves serves in the outback of Australia. During the rainy season, he sits up all night with a dying man. Hargreaves has malaria, and in a fever, in the dark, he has a dream about David Anderson, an Australian pilot who, in the 1980's, is assigned the job of flying the Queen of England around the world. He falls in love with an English girl, and they get married and move to Australia. Hargreaves wakes up and realizes he's been dreaming. A short time later, he goes to a remote camp to baptize a baby—and believes that the child, who was born the night of his dream, is the David Anderson he dreamed of.

Review - In the Wet

Having the main story be a dream within another story was an odd plot device. Shute's main point was to predict what he thinks the Commonwealth would be like in the future. He was not at all in favor of Socialism, and preferred to give individuals more than one vote based on their education and ability.
