Notes:Tony brings his new bride Alice to meet his regal grandmother in L.A. The grandmother is surrounded by servants and family members and lives in a shrine of an old house. Tony is called away—he used to be in the secret service and is needed to do one more job. Somebody is feeding information to drug smugglers, and Tony suspects that its Dr. Devon, who visits his grandmother's house often. He leaves Alice with with instructions that she can't tell ANYONE where he's gone. Almost immediately, Alive discovers that the cleaning woman, Mrs. Peele, knows where Tony really went. She has to bribe Mrs. Peele not to tell, and things quickly spiral out of control. She takes money to Mrs. Peele's house and is still there when Devon shows up and kills Mrs. Peele in an attempt to get her to talk. Devon suspects Alice and plans on drugging her and taking her away from the house. Grandma finds out and tells Alice to run. When Tony comes back, he finds Alice working in a drug store on the other side of the city. Devon is arrested, and all is well.

Review - Girl With a Secret, The

A ridiculous plot that dragged for most of the book but got a little better toward the end. The idea that Tony, from Chicago, was asked to go on a case that coincidentally centered on a man who visited his grandmother's house in L.A. is as implausible a plot point as I've ever read. And Tony's family were all portrayed as idiots who need to be locked away.
