Notes:Subtitle: An American Immigrant Visits Yugoslavia and Discovers His Old Country

Armed Services Edition

The author moved to the US from Slovenia as a teen, just before WWI. He became a published writer and married an American woman. He got a grant to return to his home—now Yugoslavia. He discovered he was a celebrity because of his books. He reunited with his family, then toured the country, meeting with peasants and politicians. As his visit went on, he learned more and more about the dictatorship of King Alexander and became something of a focal point for the opposition. The government was funded by European powers, which meant that the opposition was largely Communist. Adamic and his wife cut their visit two months short out of fear for reprisals from the government which was beginning to suspect them of writing an anti-government book.

Reviews for The Native's Return

Review - Native's Return, The

Dated of course, by WWII, Communist Yugoslavia, the internal wars, and, now, the breakup of the region into small countries. I learned more about the region than I'd ever known, but the book was rather dry and got overly political in the second half.
