American soldier Charles Barrett is taken prisoner by the Italians in North Africa. The next thing he knows, he's in an insane asylum outside Rome and his doctor is insisting he's an Italian, da Ponte, who has been in the asylum for 25 years. Charles struggles to find the truth. He meets an old man who claims to be a general. The general tells him he can get out simply by agreeing that he is da Ponte, then asks him to contact a countess in Rome who knows the names of people who can help the Americans defeat the Germans. Charles gets out, goes to Rome, and finds out the countess has been murdered. He meets her daughter, Sybilla, and falls in love. He tells her everything, but then he is arrested for supposedly planting a mine in a German hotel. Sybilla contacts a powerful man who gets Charles returned to the asylum. There, his doctor admits that the whole thing has been a plan to get the names to the Americans. He's given the list and sent to an airport where he has just a few minutes with Sybilla before he has to go. He promises her to return and bring the American army with him.

Review - Without Orders

A ridiculous plot with much time taken up with Charles' thoughts as he tries to figure out what's going on and who is with him and against him. The underlying theme was supposed to be a soldier, alone and without orders, who still stayed faithful to his cause and did his best to fight.
