Captain Asa thinks the hills have gotten too modern, so he takes off in his horse-drawn wagon with his three children to find a quiet, wholesome place to live. They stop for a while in Mississippi. To Asa's chagrin, his oldest daughter takes off with a gambling man. He moves on. After a while, his son decides to take off and work on the railroad. Asa and his remaining daughter run a store in St. Louis, but when a boy takes an interest in her, he packs off off back home. But things have changed. A coal mill is on the land next to the cabin, fouling the air and taking Asa's water. Then his daughter runs off and his dog is killed by a mill train. Asa becomes a hermit, but finally realizes he has to change with the times or die. He takes off to visit his children, find a wife, and settle in California. During all his travels, he visits a dance marathon, a revival meeting, a carnival, a political convention, and other aspects of life at that time.

Review - Everywhere I Roam

The characters never became real to me—they were more emblems of the times. The descriptions of life were interesting, and the moral lessons was challenging, but it wasn't a book I couldn't put down.
