Nathan Hart, schoolteacher and painter, is arrested during the Whiskey Rebellion when he sides with the farmers. He escapes and flees to Genesee Valley, New York, where Charles Williamson was selling land to create a landed aristocracy. Despite his democratic views, Nathan and Williamson become friends. With his fellow escapee, Whirling Gragg, Nathan buys a farm, between that and painting the occasional portrait, he makes a living. For a while, he pursues Rachel, a disciple in a religious cult, but ultimately she refuses to leave. Nathan meets Catherine O'Bail, part Irish but mostly Indian. When he catches a fever, she saves his life and they fall in love. But marrying an Indian woman isn't done in that culture. Williamson pursues his plan, organizing fairs and horse races to induce wealthy people to settle in the valley. Nathan meets Elanor, a girl from a rich family, who wants to marry him — if he'll except her offer and take up life on a large estate. In the end, Nathan realizes that it's Catherine that he loves, and me marries her knowing the challenges the union will create.

Review - Genesee Fever

All of the characters were real people except for Nathan, Whirling, Eleanor, and Catherine. The events were real, although not of such a major nature to keep this from being a character-driven story. Nathan was the supposed hero, who stuck to his democratic leanings, resisted pressure to become wealthy, cool-headedly staved off several crises, and worked hard like a common man. But he was also a rake who slept with, or tried to, with pretty much every girl he knew. So far as the story goes, I was glad he chose Catherine in the end because she was by far the most interesting character.
