Bunker comes to in an insane asylum with no memory of who he is. He meets a local girl named Alice who helps him escape. He heads to London and bamboozles a German baron into hiring him as a companion. They wander about, with Bunker often getting them into jams with his wit but escaping with his charm. They head to the country where they meet Alice. the baron is smitten and jealous of Bunker's friendship with the girl. The baron sends Bunker away, but when he arrives at his next destination, he finds Bunker impersonating him. Bunker comes clean to the baron who believes his story and determines to help him. Bunker returns to London and tracks down those responsible for his treatment. A doctor was hired to take him to the continent for his health but instead had him committed and took the European trip with a friend. Bunker forces the doctor to have him declared sane but otherwise takes not action, figuring his adventures and friendship with the baron are payback enough. The baron marries Alice.

Review - Lunatic at Large, The

An amusing concept, and with some amusing passages, but the story is full of holes that nag me—like why Bunker has little memory and how he can function going forward.
