William Wilmer, 29, lives a dull live in a boarding house run by the Keelers. He has a boring job in a boring insurance office with a dictatorial boss. His only joy in life is the morning smile he gets when he says hello to his coworker Mary Sweeney. Then one morning he hears the voice of a policeman's horse. Later, at the zoo, he hears a lion speak and realizes he can speak back. Word gets around and soon Wilmer is world-famous. He's fired by the insurance office but soon has a much more lucrative job at the zoo as animal liaison. His skills soon have him in demand with animal owners and advertisers, he's rolling in money, and has to hire a secretary. He asks Mary, who immediately quits her job and joins him. In time he decides to buy a farm where tired animals can rest. The Keelers come to keep things up. Then Mary disappears because—being a proper young lady—she can't live there with him. But Mary is really the only important thing to Wilmer, so he finds her and proposes and all live happily ever after.

Review - Mr. Wilmer

A silly and amusing little book obviously written for young teens in a simpler time.
