Obviously meant as the first volume in a history of Arkansas. "Arkansas" during the years in question meant Arkansas Post, a community and military post under the French and Spanish that never grew to more than 400 people. The entire post moved up and down the river a couple times to meet the needs of various times. The people hunted, traded and fought with Indians, and lived in near-squalor. They grew a few crops and raised a few animals, but overall it was an unimpressive place. A battle took place there during the Revolutionary War—Spanish and their allied Indians against the British and their allied Indians.

Review - Colonial Arkansas 1686-1804

The author took every last fact he could discover about the Post and turned them into a dry, but competently written history that made for a dull read.
