Notes:Richard Shakespeare, brother to William, is a young actor who performs with his brother's company. He plays women's parts, but desires to be promoted to men's parts. He's also in love with Sylvia, seamstress and lady-in-waiting to a duchess. As Will and the company prepare to present A Midsummer Night's Dream at the wedding of the duchess' daughter, two of Will's plays are stolen by a rival company. Richard is accused at first, but volunteers to clear his name by recovering the plays--if his brother will give him men's parts. Will is kidnapped by agents of the rival theater, but gets away. His brother and friends beat up the agents, recover the plays, and put on a successful show at the wedding. Richard is given a major part in Romeo and Juliet and marries Sylvia.

Review - Fools and Mortals

Readable, but it took me a while to get through because it lacks in plot. The thread of Richard and the stolen plays is only a small bit. The rest of the novel reads as though Cornwell researched 16th-century theater and wanted to include everything he'd discovered.
