Little Black Sambo

by Helen Bannerman
Category: "Fiction - Chapter Books"
Pages:56
Year of Publication:1899
Notes:The jolly and exciting tale of the little boy who lost his red coat and his blue trousers and his purple shoes but who was saved from the tigers to eat 169 pancakes for his supper, has been universally loved by generations of children.

Helen Bannerman (1862-1946) was born in Scotland. The daughter of a chaplain who was posted to foreign countries, she lived for over thirty years in India. She married a doctor in the Indian Medical Service, and they had two daughters. This story was written by Mrs. Bannerman to amuse her young girls during a long train journey. It has since been banned from most U.S. libraries for its supposed political incorrectness.

I know it's controversial, but I bet you read it if you were around before it was banned.
