Notes:Young Martin's comic odyssey to the New World; the naive Tom Pinch's rite of passage from innocence to enlightenment; the smooth scheming of the arch hypocrite Pecksniff; the grotesque self-love of Mrs. Gamp; the increasingly-desperate machinations of murderous Jonas Chuzzlewit; all are portrayed with a typically Dickensian flair for unerringly accurate social satire and buoyantly extravagant characterization.

Review - Martin Chuzzlewit

Not one of Dickens' more famous works, and rightly so. Very few likeable characters. Jr. is dull, as is Pinch. Tapley has some good moments but doesn't play a major role. Dickens obviously hates America and has nothing good to say about Americans. Even the characters who were supposed to be funny were just annoying.
