Breakfast and Such

There were approximately 34 reasons why I didn’t sleep at all on Saturday night. They include, but are not limited to: frozen feet, the long hike to the outhouse, a persistent raccoon that kept trying (for the most part unsuccessfully) to get into our garbage bag, frozen feet, a Wild Turkey calling in the distance, a slowly-deflating air mattress, somebody (our daughter) crawling into our tent in the middle of the night, frozen feet, four or five Barred Owls, one of which was calling directly above our tent for several minutes …

For breakfast, we had a feast of ham steaks, potatoes and onions pan-fried in ham fat and scrambled eggs. It was a group effort, and it was worth it.

It took a long time to cook, eat and clean up after breakfast. By the time we were done, it was almost lunchtime, so we ate s’mores. We sat around for a couple hours. And so ended a quick, strange but fantastic weekend. We packed up the tent and headed out. I somehow managed to stay awake, and we arrived home a bit before 4:00.

I should mention one more momentous event that took place this morning. We were talking about various foods, and I said that I’d try (almost) anything once. And then I realized that I’d never had a drink of coffee. I have tasted coffee-flavored items (candy and such) and even coffee beans, but not actual coffee. A friend said she hadn’t either. So I poured two quarter cups, poured in some cream and handed one to her. We counted to three and each took a sip. Neither of us became converts. If that’s what it tastes like, no thanks. I was ragged on until I gulped down the rest of the coffee in my cup, but if I never have more, that’s fine with me.

My first cup

Good thing you had that 1/4 cup of coffee!
