Cary, Illinois — Swallow Way
For me, skippers are to butterflies what gulls are to birds — I usually don’t bother to take the time to tell all the similar species apart. But this one was so large and so boldly-marked that I actually managed to figure out what it was.
I was walking along a sidewalk through an empty lot in a residential neighborhood when I spotted it. It landed on a purple clover flower. I tried to get a good photo, but it kept “skipping” from flower to flower. After a couple minutes, I lost sight of it entirely.
