Conversation Starters

I do not have a talent for making small talk. In situations where small talk is called for, I am uncomfortable, particularly with people I don’t know well. Once I get beyond “Hi,” and “How are you?,” I generally resort to a blank, but friendly stare. I can go for a while on sports or movies, but even there I frequently get lost after a while. The weather offers me nothing.

I’d like to improve my conversational skills. I think the best way to do this is to observe other people and see how they go about it. The opening sentence is often key. With that in mind, I have paid close attention to conversational openers that others have used with me. I’ve listed the best ones in case I might want to use them sometime. So don’t be surprised if I walk up to you one day and say …

  • Would you still love me if my lips were permanently like this?
  • I’ve been thinking about what you said the other day, and I don’t think I’ve ever passed up blue ice cream, no matter what flavor it was.
  • Melissa and Julie are going to come down and we’re going to pop all the balloons.
  • She’s got Stonehenge on her farm.
  • Fly got sick last night. I’m 95% sure it was vomit.
  • Did I have you smell this yesterday?
  • You can explain away God with quantum physics. And you can prove Him too.
  • Finding Nemo will always bring me joy.

Note: All of these are authentic and as close to the actual words as my memory can get. If you recognize your own comment, please don’t think I’m mocking you. On the contrary, I admire your ability to jump right into the meat of a conversation without reference to the humidity.
