The Golden Eagle Ferry crosses the Mississippi River between southern Calhoun County, Illinois and St. Charles, Missouri. It is not free — it cost us $15 for a round trip. There were about six vehicles on the barge on both trips. The tow boat/barge arrangement was the same as on the Brussels Ferry.
While we waited for the ferry to reach the Illinois shore, I got out to take some photos. The restaurant at the ferry landing had the slogan “On, and sometimes in, the Mississippi.”
I set up the chair and took a photo of the river just as a Bald Eagle flew by.
Two more can be seen in the tall trees at the left of this photo taken as we headed across the river. Four more were on the ice along the shore by the Missouri landing.
