| Description: | The Scarf (Victor Mature) runs the underground in Holland during the war. British secret service wants to coordinate his attacks with their own plans. They have Dutch Colonel Pieter Deventer (Clark Gable) train Carla (Lana Turner) to be a spy, choosing her because she looks like a collaborating Dutch schoolteacher that they've just gotten rid of. Pieter doubts Carla's abilities and loyalties at first, but then the fall in love. Carla parachutes into Holland and contacts Scarf. At first he refuses to cooperate, but when the Dutch accuse his mother of collaborating, he changes his mind — and becomes an agent for the Nazis. Soon his raids on German troops begin to fail. His men are met by snipers and killed, but Scarf somehow always escapes. The British suspect Carla, and Pieter goes back to Holland to investigate. He believes Carla when she says Scarf is the leak, but by then, he's been shot and captured by the Germans. Meanwhile, the British attack on Arnhem fails and thousands of troops are trapped. Scarf tells Pieter to let him go in and rescue them, but Pieter knows he just wants to kill Carla to hide his own guilt. So the British send others in to rescue the trapped troops and Carla. Pieter confronts Scarf, who tries to kill him and escape but is killed. The trapped troops escape and Pieter and Carla are reunited. |
