Blue Spring Run — Blue Spring State Park, Florida
The 73-degree water of Blue Spring draws a large population of manatees every winter. There were over 70 there on the day of our visit.
Most of the time, the manatees just floated below the surface, coming up occasionally for air. A few were grazing on the bottom, and one was chewing at the bark on a fallen tree in the water. Once in a while, one or two would swim lazily by beneath the viewing decks.
The manatees share the run with alligators, but apparently have little to fear from them. Here are some swimming near a large alligator that just climbed out of the water onto the bank.
And, of course, the obligatory red chair photo.

Blue Spring Run — Blue Spring State Park, Florida
Several of these large turtles were sunning themselves on fallen logs in the run near the St. Johns River. A couple large alligators were nearby, and the turtles seemed to be keeping their eyes on them. An Anhinga stood on a nearby log drying its wings, and several West Indian Manatees were grazing and lazing in the water.

Blue Spring State Park, Florida
Our main destination on the Saturday after CPC was Blue Spring State Park, to see the manatees.
We had a little trouble finding the park. Our GPS directed us down the wrong road, about two miles south of the correct route. We cut over on a residential street that soon turned into a sandy, rutted track. We came upon a yard with two pieces of carnival equipment decorated with stuffed animals that had been pummeled by the weather until they looked like carcasses hung out to warn trespassers.
We arrived around 10:30, and the parking lot was already almost full. We split up early on and wandered about.
The park is situated on the St. Johns River about 20 miles north of Orlando and 20 miles west of the Atlantic coast. The 73-degree waters of the spring bubble up at the end of a short stream named Blue Spring Run. It’s in this run that the manatee gather in the winter.
Looking downstream along Blue Spring Run toward the St. Johns River.
We saw manatee immediately, but they weren’t the only wildlife around. Cormorants and Anhingas perched on buoys and snags. Large schools of gar swam in the clear water and two huge alligators hauled out of the water right across from one of the viewing decks. A Florida Red-Bellied Turtle was sunning near one of the alligators, but it remained cautious.
After seeing what there was to see, I met up with my friends and we headed up to the Thursby House, built in 1872 by the owners of a steamboat landing on the St. Johns River.
There wasn’t much to see inside, so we sat down on rocking chairs on the porch and relaxed after our busy week.

White Wolf Cafe
On the Saturday after the CPC conference, five of us took a late flight back home so we could spend much of the day relaxing in Florida. Everybody has talents that set them apart from the crowd. One of my boss’s talents is to find restaurants that have excellent food and interesting decor. He didn’t fail us. He directed us to the White Wolf Cafe in the “Bohemian” section of Orlando, far, far from Disney World.
The cafe is also an antique store — chandeliers and Tiffany lamps hang from the ceiling and signs and architectural pieces decorate the walls. Some of the windows were stained glass.
The menu boasted of “best cinnamon buns in the universe,” so we ordered one of those and split it.
It was a bold claim, and I haven’t tried many cinnamon buns from other sectors of the universe, but it was in the top 20 of those I’ve had on earth. The eggs, bacon, and hash browns I ordered were also very tasty.
