Praying Mantis

They don’t bite, exactly. But this one gave me a good jab in the finger when I plucked it off a grass stem and dropped it on the chair. It immediately assumed this stance to let me know it would be happy to jab me again, given the opportunity.

When it determined just how chicken I was to tangle with it again, it hopped on the back of the chair and climbed to the top. It struck this pose just before taking off across the prairie.

The thing was huge, and earlier, when I first saw it flying low over the grass, I thought it was a deranged bird.

Brown Snake

I spotted the largest Brown Snake I’ve ever seen on the trail at Moraine Hills State Park — it was about 14 inches long. I picked it up and held it on the seat of the chair. It writhed around and looked aggressive, but never tried to bite me.

It finally settled down enough for me to get this shot.

After a few moments, it crawled off the back of the chair into the grass.

Grasshopper

As I was trying to catch this grasshopper to put it on the chair, it jumped — and landed on the chair. I was taking pictures of it when an older couple walked by. The woman looked at me like I was weird. The guy did too, but he said, “I hope they turn out well for you.” I thanked him.

Painted Turtle (and Mike)

I spotted a tiny Painted Turtle on the road leading into Moraine Hill State Park. I pulled over and picked it up to save it from being crushed and to get its picture in the chair. It was tucked back into its shell, so I put it on the seat next to me and drove to the parking lot. I pulled out the chair, my camera and the turtle and set up for the shot.

As I was waiting for it to come out of its shell more, a guy walked by. He said, “You’re taking a picture of a turtle on a chair?”

I said, “Yep, I am.”

He watched for a minute or so, then said, “What are you waiting for?”

I said, “I’m waiting for it to come out of its shell.”

He said, “I think I can help with that.” He walked over and picked up the turtle.

He tipped the turtle this way and that while explaining to me that he regularly finds them along the road and likes to show them to kids, who love them. After several attempts, he did something that got my turtle out of its shell and flailing. He put it down on the chair and it took off for the edge and tumbled into the grass. I thanked him and asked him if he wanted to release the turtle. He said he’d look for some kids to show it to first.

I watched as he walked down along the river. He didn’t find any kids, and he did let the turtle go in the water, so all ended well for all concerned.

John Wayne Birthplace – Winterset, Iowa

If you’re ever in Winterset, Iowa with time on your hands, and if you’re a big fan of John Wayne, then I recommend you visit his birthplace. Otherwise, not so much.

I paid my $6 in the gift shop and had 20 minutes to kill before the “tour.” I asked the woman behind the counter if I could take a picture with the chair on the porch and she said that would be fine. I found out later that the group touring the house at the time gathered at the window to watch me and try to figure out what I was doing. I apologized, but the lady smiled and said she was just worried that I had left my chair on the porch.

The house is tiny, with four tiny rooms. Two of the rooms are furnished with period pieces, none of which belonged to the Waynes. The other two rooms were filled with displays, most of which were promo photos from Wayne’s movies. They did have a few artifacts from the movies — an eye patch from True Grit, a suitcase from Stagecoach, a cavalry hat from Rio Lobo, and a panel from the pub in The Quiet Man. The guide knew her stuff and was pleasant, but there just wasn’t much to the place.

John Wayne’s real name was Marion Robert Morrison. His father was a pharmacist’s assistant in town. Wayne was born on May 26, 1907. Three years later, his family moved to a nearby town where his father opened his own pharmacy.
