Kentucky

The chair entered Kentucky west of Cincinnati on May 27, but I couldn’t stop in the middle of the Ohio River bridge, so we stopped at the Tennessee border on May 28.

Creation Museum — Petersburg, Kentucky

We spent a morning touring the Creation Museum.

When we strolled through the garden, we saw two wild Northern Water Snakes swimming in one of the ponds. The top one was about two-and-a-half feet long, the other one about a foot and a half.

Whitewater Canal State Historic Site — Metamora, Indiana

We recently returned from a 10-day vacation, most of which was spent in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with family. On our trip down, we stopped in southeastern Indiana and took a ride on a canal boat.

What’s left of the canal runs right through the middle of the tiny town of Metamora. The boat was pulled by two horses (although mules were used when the canal was in operation.)

It was a chilly, rainy day. There were only a few other people on the boat. A guide gave us the history of the canal was we traveled at two-miles an hour through the town.

The highlight of the trip was the Duck Creek Aqueduct, which carries the canal over the creek 14 feet above the water. This is the first time I’ve ever taken a boat ride across a bridge — and this is the only place in the U.S. where I could do it.

After the ride, we walked up the path to the aqueduct and took a closer look.

The state also operates the Metamora Grist Mill up the canal, but it wasn’t operating when we were there.

One of the original locks, about half a mile downstream from the aqueduct.

Paradise Pup

This place is located in Des Plaines, but I’d never been there or knew it existed. Then, not long ago, I happened upon it on the Internet and read that the food was awesome.

My daughter and I drove in on a rainy afternoon, deliberately arriving after lunchtime to avoid the lines that often extend down the block.

There wasn’t much to it.

The inside was tiny — 10 stools along the edge of a tiny dining/ordering area — and full. (Several other people entered just after I took this photo.)

We ordered a hot dog, a cheddar burger and three-layer fries (Merkts’ Cheddar Cheese, sour cream and real bacon) and split them all between us.

The food was awesome — every bit of it. I’d say it was even worth the two-hour round trip.
