What the Storm Blew In

This Great Horned Owl spent the day in the trees just behind our house. He didn’t move, even when my neighbor’s two dogs walked right underneath him.

Snowpocalypse

Beginning late on Monday, January 31, and continuing into early Wednesday morning, over 20 inches of snow fell on Chicagoland. This was the third heaviest snow fall for this area in recorded history. Wind gusts near 50 mph made things even more exciting. The snow plows gave up trying to clear my street on Tuesday afternoon and waiting until the wind died down. I was off work on Wednesday, of course, and spent most of the morning shoveling my driveway, which I accomplished long before the plows had done their job. Our mailbox was under the mound on the right of the photo with just the door visible.

Orlando, Florida — Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

I wasn’t doing much birding at this point in my life. I’d started my blog and begun carrying the red chair around with me. Life was stressful in many ways, and I had lost interest. I hadn’t added a lifer in more than two years.

I was in Orlando to attend a conference. On Friday afternoon, I grabbed my camera and went for a walk around the grounds and along a nearby road. When I got back to the hotel, I skirted a pond along the parking lot. I saw two Limpkins foraging for what looked like clams. One of the birds kept stealing the clams the other bird found. They paid very little attention to me and allowed me to get very close. I suppose I watched them for about 10 minutes.
