Golf-A-Rama

An abandoned fun park slowly decays along the highway in Beach Park. I drove by on my way to Illinois Beach State Park, but couldn’t get it out of my mind. Later in the day, I went back and took some photos.

GolfARama — Beach Park, Illinois

I wondered how many couples visited on their first dates. I thought about all the birthday parties and father-daughter outings that went here. I could almost hear the echoes of the past. The place is for lease, but it has crumbled beyond repair.

Next to the miniature golf course was a go-cart track and a batting cage.

The thought that kept running through my mind was — “Is there any way I can get that cow for my basement?”

Union Pacific Rail Yard — Waukegan, Illinois

To get to Waukegan Harbor, I had to drive by the Union Pacific rail yard. After I wandered around the harbor for half an hour or so, I wandered over and took some photos of the trains.

Waukegan, Illinois — September 20, 2008

I have no idea why, but for the entire time I was in the area, several of these engines were running. I wonder how much gas money that cost somebody … A Metra station was right next to the Union Pacific yard. I wondered as I wandered whether somebody would ask me what I was doing or tell me to get lost, but none of the very few people I saw even looked at me. I could have gotten a whole lot closer than I did.

Waukegan Harbor Light — Lake Michigan

Saturday promised to be pleasant, and I was in the mood to take pictures. I drove up to Waukegan and wandered about the harbor. I strolled the length of the harbor breakwater where the harbor light sits. The current tower is all that remains of a much larger building that was built in 1889. It caught fire back in the 1960s and most of it was removed. The top has been replaced with a tiny beacon, and what is left is stubby and unimpressive.

There is another, smaller light on a second breakwater to the north. I thought it was funny that the guy pointing at the light is dressed just like it.

The harbor was a busy place. The breakwater was crowded with people fishing and people strolling. Boats passed up or down the channel frequently, including this police boat.

I also took some pans of Waukegan harbor.

Sundogs

The sun was sinking fast, so I didn’t have time to get to a more impressive location. That’s why there are power lines and towers in the foreground. But I caught the sun dogs pretty well — they’re those vertical rainbow-looking arcs on either side of the sun. I’m told that white sun dogs are caused by reflections off ice crystals in the clouds while colored sun dogs (like these) are caused by light refracting through the crystals. Supposedly, the name “dog” came about because they often have a “tail” sticking out at the end.

Spiny Softshells

They look like pancakes with feet. They’re skittish and never allow me to get close enough for good photos. There were several on logs along the Fox River at Moraine Hills State Park on a sunny afternoon in September. In the top photo, a Painted Turtle shares the log.
