Wicked

I usually plan our vacations and other outings, so I decided to give my wife a turn. She chose the musical Wicked, showing at the Oriental Theatre in downtown Chicago. Our seats were in the balcony, eight rows up right in the middle.

I didn’t know the story beforehand. I knew it had something to do with the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz, but that’s all. My wife thoroughly enjoyed herself. I thought it was pretty good. I enjoyed “Popular” and a couple other songs. I came very close to falling asleep a few times, but that’s probably due more to the fact that the theater was crowded and warm than to the quality of the show. The sets weren’t all that impressive.

When the lights came up for intermission, I thought it was over. I pulled out my camera and took a couple shots of the interior of the theater. An usher came rushing down and yelled at me. (Of course, the pictures didn’t come out anyway.) My wife was still sitting in her seat, so I called her to come. She asked me where I was going and explained that there was a whole other half to go. It took me a couple minutes to adjust to this fact, but then I settled in. The second half didn’t do a lot for me other than appreciating how they cleverly tied in the characters from the original story.

I wasn’t the only one who thought it was over at halftime. The people next to me left and never came back. For Act II, the only two empty seats in the theater were next to me, which made things a bit cooler, which kept me awake. I liked it better than Les Miserables, the only other Broadway production I’ve seen.

Drive-In

One of the items on my list of 30 Things to Do in Chicagoland was “See a movie at a drive-in theater.” The other night, we went to the McHenry Outdoor Theater and Drive-In in McHenry. The first movie, WALL.E, began at 9:15. We got there about half an hour early. We paid $7 each. I wandered around and took some photos while my wife read in the car. The place was crowded, and about 50 kids were running around the grassy area beneath the screen. I bought $8.50-worth of food at the concession stand — two ice cream bars and a pretzel. They had the metal speakers we could hang on our car windows, but we chose the radio option once the movie began. Oldies from the 1950’s were blasting over the speakers. The place had a real nostalgic feel to it.

When the windows were open, we were eaten alive by mosquitoes. When the windows were closed, it was muggy and hot. The screen, especially early in the movie, wasn’t well lit and we had a hard time seeing what was going on. Other than that, it was great. We compromised with the heat/mosquito situation by leaving the windows open a crack and slapping frequently.

The movie was cute (what we could see of it), and the short before the movie was very funny. We enjoyed the experience — we haven’t been in a drive-in in over 20 years — but it’s not one we’ll be in a hurry to repeat. Which is too bad, because when we bought our tickets, I mentioned to the guy in the booth that it was our first visit. He welcomed me and gave me a free pass for two adults and two kids on any Monday to Thursday night between now and September.

The second movie was Prince Caspian, which we’ve already seen, so we didn’t stay. As we were pulling out at 11:10, the announcer said the second movie would start in 25 minutes. That would be 11:35. It’s a two hour and 24 minute movie, which means it would let out at 1:59 am.

Billy Goat Tavern

My wife bought tickets for a matinee showing of Wicked today. We decided to take the train down a few hours early and check off another item on my list of 30 Things to do in Chicagoland — Eat a cheezborger (but not fries!) at the Billy Goat Tavern. This place is famous for two things: 1) a curse the owner put on the Chicago Cubs in 1945 when they wouldn’t allow his goat into Wrigley Field for a World Series game — which curse is supposedly responsible for the Cubs lousy history since; and 2) a skit by John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray that made famous the owner’s banter:

“Cheezborger! Cheezborger! You want doublecheez?!? Don’t look at the menu, look at ME! I order for you already – DOUBLECHEEZ is best!  No fries – CHEEPS! No Pepsi – COKE!”

The place looks like a hole in a wall, mostly because it is a hole in a wall. It’s tucked underneath Michigan Avenue in a dark tunnel. And even then you have to walk down several steps to get to the eating area.

That doesn’t seem to affect business any. There was a steady stream of customers the entire time we were there. We walked up to the counter and the guy gave us the famous spiel and, of course, we both got doublecheez, cheeps, and Cokes. There were huge tins of fresh onions and pickles, the buns were fantastic and the atmosphere — if you like dank basement bars — was fun.
