zonotrichia (from zone, girdle, and trichos, hair) leucophrys (from leukos, white, and ophrys, eyebrow)

Sunday, October 21, 1979 — 11:30 am

I stood in my bedroom and stared out the back window a lot these days, and once again it paid off. A White-crowned Sparrow landed briefly in the tall evergreen that was just over the property line in the neighbor’s yard.

I was on the dam at the end of Bulrush Pond when I saw two Rusty Blackbirds. They were foraging on the ground underneath the bushes at the edge of the small slough on the low side of the dam.

Bird #78 — Eastern Towhee

Thursday, October 4, 1979 — 4:15 pm

Lincolnshire, Illinois — Ryerson Conservation Area

A friend and I parked and began walking down the trail. Almost immediately we noticed the Towhee. It was foraging on the ground in the oak woods by the parking lot. When we stopped to look at it, it flew off. We hiked around on the trails for a while without seeing anything else of interest.

Bird #77 — Golden-crowned Kinglet

regulus (diminutive of king) satrapa (one wearing a gold crown)

Thursday, October 4, 1979 — 1:30 pm

Deerfield, Illinois

These Golden-crowned Kinglets gave me a hard time. They were foraging through the woods on a college campus, moving constantly through the brush. It was difficult getting a good look at them. I chased them for a long way into the woods before I was positive that I was seeing the yellow crown and eye white eye stripe.
