Crawford County, Arkansas — Frog Bayou Wildlife Management Area

I was birding the cells, mostly looking for shorebirds. I was walking through a patch of spotty weeds when I spotted this snake, well camouflaged against the black dirt. But in Arkansas, I always look where I’m walking. The snake wasn’t moving when I first saw it. When I moved around it to get photos, it coiled, but it never made any aggressive moves.

I’d had it in my head that kingsnakes were huge, and maybe the get that way, but this one was only two-and-a-half feet long or so.
