Rock House Cave

The website of Petit Jean State Park makes the point that Rock House Cave isn’t a real cave, just an “unusually deep rock shelter.” Whatever it is, it’s rather impressive, easily the size of my backyard.

A sign at the entrance states that Indians used the cave for shelter between 500 and 1,000 years ago and left some paintings on the walls. This is the only one we could find. It was on the ceiling, not the walls, and I have no idea what it is supposed to be — an octopus?

Every bit as interesting as the cave is the trail that leads to it. It crosses a large field of formations known as turtle rocks, for obvious reason.

Sure looks like a cave to me. Maybe an unusually shallow one, but a cave nonetheless.
