The End of a Tradition

We’ve lived near Barrington for 14 years now, and have probably driven through the downtown area on Route 59 at least once a month during that time. Every time we’ve made the trip, we’ve passed The Canteen Restaurant. And almost every time we’ve passed The Canteen Restaurant, I’ve said, “We need to go there sometime.” It’s gotten to be a tradition.

On Good Friday, we were looking for something to do that was new, close and not very expensive. So we went to The Canteen. (It’s about 100 yards from The Catlow.)

Apart from the retro sign, the outside isn’t much to look at. But the interior looks like one of the old diners my Dad always looked for when we took vacations when I was a kid. The walls were decorated with old movie posters and vinyl records. Model airplanes hung from the ceiling.

It has the huge menu typical of Greek restaurants. We both ordered breakfast skillets and were both very pleased. Mine (below) had bacon, potatoes, sausages, ham, mushrooms, green peppers and two kinds of cheese. The pancakes were tasty and fluffy, the way I like them.

The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was pleasant and the orange juice was fresh-squeezed.
