Gillespie County Safety Rest Area — Ranch Road 1 — Stonewall, Texas
While I was photographing the Gulf Fritillary, my sister had wandered of in another direction and made friends with a Hispanic boy who enjoys drawing butterflies. They had stumbled upon a garden that was absolutely swarming with Queens

Queens are related to Monarchs. They’re common in the southwest but only rarely make it to northern Illinois. I’m pretty sure I saw more butterflies in the three days I traveled around Texas than I have all year in Illinois. We spent about 20 minutes at the rest area, then moved on because we had other things we wanted to do. But I could easily have spent much more time in the area.
