Mount Magazine State Park, Arkansas

Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas. In all my trips to the state, I’d never been there. My in-laws offered to take us one day and we happily accepted their offer. It was a two-hour drive along back roads.

We ate an awesome lunch in the lodge looking over the valley.

After we ate, we hiked a short trail to the high point.

I wanted to make absolute sure that I was the highest person in the state.

In front of the sign was a marker to indicate the highest point.

Here I am balancing on the entire state of Arkansas.

The sun came out while we were up there. We walked back down to the lodge where I got these photos. One of the nearby hills appeared to be on fire.

Blue Mountain Lake is an Army Corps of Engineer reservoir created by a dam on the Petit Jean River.

One more note — just below the summit, I spotted the highest Armadillo in Arkansas.

If you’re wondering how I found the strength to hike after loosing a third of my blood, the answer is that I didn’t. I walked very slowly and took a lot of rests.
