Jurustic Park

After a beautiful three days, Monday was rainy and overcast, but things let up for a bit while we were in Marshfield. Jurustic Park was about two acres in extent, with a variety of metal sculptures scattered about the “Hobbit House.”

Clyde Wynia claims he doesn’t create these creatures but excavates them from the nearby McMillan Marsh where they went extinct during the “Iron Age.” Clyde himself gave us a tour. He has a sly sense of humor and a predilection for off-color jokes.

The creatures are clever and popular — we saw several along the streets of Marshfield after we left Jurustic Park. We bought a small frog. We stayed about half an hour.

Paul Bunyan’s

It’s long been a tradition of ours to eat breakfast at Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty at least once every trip up north. The food isn’t amazing, except for the donuts, but there’s something about the ambiance that we enjoy. We went on the final day of the year it was open.

Sunday Afternoon

We didn’t do much on Sunday afternoon except to enjoy the beautiful view and beautiful weather while eating leftover kringle and getting updates on the Packers and Bears games.

The cabin

Our cabin was decorated with bears. We had a contest to see which of us could find them all. None of us succeeded. When we compared our counts, we discovered there were 52. Here’s one of them.

A Common Loon, well along in its molt into winter plumage, spent a lazy couple hours drifting in the Wisconsin River off our stretch of shoreline. I didn’t see it doing anything very aggressive, but a couple grebes and a flock of Canada Geese sure kept their distance and scurried away quickly when the loon got too close.

Last Light, First Light

We arrived at our cabin on the Rhinelander Flowage of the Wisconsin River just after sundown when there was still a bit of color in the sky. Before I unpacked or even went inside, I walked down to the shore and took a photo.

I woke up the next morning before sunrise and walked down to take another shot.
