Mount Magazine State Park, Arkansas

Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas. In all my trips to the state, I’d never been there. My in-laws offered to take us one day and we happily accepted their offer. It was a two-hour drive along back roads.

We ate an awesome lunch in the lodge looking over the valley.

After we ate, we hiked a short trail to the high point.

I wanted to make absolute sure that I was the highest person in the state.

In front of the sign was a marker to indicate the highest point.

Here I am balancing on the entire state of Arkansas.

The sun came out while we were up there. We walked back down to the lodge where I got these photos. One of the nearby hills appeared to be on fire.

Blue Mountain Lake is an Army Corps of Engineer reservoir created by a dam on the Petit Jean River.

One more note — just below the summit, I spotted the highest Armadillo in Arkansas.

If you’re wondering how I found the strength to hike after loosing a third of my blood, the answer is that I didn’t. I walked very slowly and took a lot of rests.

After the Ice Storm

My brother-in-law’s house was on the edge of the massive ice storm in late January that devastated northern Arkansas, southern Missouri and Kentucky. We arrived two days later, and everything outdoors was still frosted. Here are a few photos I took in his yard.

Around noon, the sun came out and it warmed up considerably. I stood in amazement and watched an ice cascade like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

Gaining Understanding Through Anemia

My wife and I went out to dinner last evening. When we exited the restaurant, it was 3 degrees and the car had been sitting out for an hour. It was cold.

I’ve recently been dealing with an ulcer. That’s under control. The bleeding has stopped. But I lost a lot of blood and I’m still very weak and occasionally dizzy — and always cold.

As I sat in the car, my entire body involuntarily knotted up from head to toe — like a clenched fist all over. I was cold in a way I’ve never been cold before — from the inside out. My bones were cold. That doesn’t happen to me. I normally get cold from the outside in.

I mentioned this to my wife through gritted teeth as I tried to relax my body. I said I was getting insight into what it’s like for women who are cold all the time.

She said, “Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like for me. Now you understand. Since you’ve experienced it, can you be a little more sympathetic toward me? Will you stop making fun of me when I say I’m cold?”

I replied, “Yes. Yes, I can be more sympathetic. But no, of course I’m not going to quit making fun of you.”
