White Sox vs. A’s — August 2, 1988

My friend and I went to this game primarily to see Canseco and McGwire. They hit some into the stands during batting practice, but were held to a single each during the game. We sat in the first row of the left-field bleachers.

During the last couple innings, fans near us were throwing money to Daryl Boston, the White Sox left fielder — for some reason. We didn’t join in — for some reason. The White Sox won 7-5.

Wausau Timbers vs. Rockford Expos — July 23, 1988

My wife and I were vacationing at my parents’ in northern Wisconsin. baseballWe went to a Wausau Timbers A league game. At the time, Wausau was a Seattle Mariners farm team. This was my first-ever Minor League game. We arrived an hour before game time. I bought a set of Timbers baseball cards. Our seats were in the third row right behind home plate. It was hot, and the sun was shining right in our eyes.

We sat right next to the mother and wife of the Timbers’ center baseballfielder, Jim Pritikin. They were loud and rude — and they both won door prizes. Hmmm. Makes ya kinda wonder, don’t it?

There were two players on the Expos who later make it to the Majors — Delino Deshields and Archie Cianfrocco. In this game, Cianfrocco hit three consecutive home runs. When he came up in the ninth inning, he was hit by a pitch. The first batter up for Wausau in the bottom of the inning had the first pitch sail right over his head. In this photograph Archie is crossing the plate after his third home run.

The Expos won 9-4.

Cubs vs. Giants — July 18, 1988

My friend and I bought these tickets back in April, hoping it would be the first night game at Wrigley Field. It wasn’t but we went and had fun anyway. We took our wives and ate lunch at Ed Debevic’s. There was an hour-long rain delay before the game. It started raining again in the seventh inning, but we were back under the upper deck, so it didn’t bother us. The Cubs won 8-3.

White Sox vs. Red Sox — July 9, 1988 (game 2)

The second game of the double-header was notable chiefly because of Roger Clemens who struck out 15 batters in eight innings. The White Sox lost 8-2.

Our seats were tiny and I had numb-butt, but we had a great time. There was a fireworks show after the game, but half of the view was blocked by the upper deck, so what we saw looked something like this.

White Sox vs. Red Sox — July 9, 1988 (game 1)

My brother-in-law came up for a week-long visit with a friend. My friend and I took them to their first Major League baseball game(s) — a White Sox/Red Sox double-header at Comiskey Park.

The first game began at 3:00. Our seats were in the lower deck of the left-field bleachers, just one row back from the field. The Sox left fielder, Gary Redus, spent about seven hours 20 feet in front of us.

Dan Pasqua, Greg Walker, and Daryl Boston of the White Sox hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The White Sox won the first game 8-7.
