Animal #28 — Snowshoe Hare

lepus americanus

July 10, 1986 — 12:00 midnight

Montreal River, Ontario, Canada

I first noticed the Snowshoe Hare munching on grass just outside the campfire circle between the fire and the cabin were staying in. It disappeared for a while, then reappeared, running straight toward us along the path. It stopped about 10 feet from us, then turned and disappeared into the woods. I suspect it was running from something, but I have no idea what. It was strange to see it running right at us.

Reptile-Amphibian #4 — Painted Turtle

chrysemys picta marginata (Midland subspecies)

Sunday, March 30, 1986 — 11:00 am

Barrington, Illinois — Baker’s Lake

I found two turtles lying in dead grass at the edge of the marsh near the floating bridge. I picked them up, studied them, made notes and tossed them into the marsh. They were lying about four feet apart when I found them. Both pulled back into their shells when I picked them up.

Their back plates alternated. The bellies were yellowish, unmarked. One was olive, approximately 8 inches by 5 inches. The other one was blacker and a bit smaller. They had a red pattern around the edge of their shells on top and bottom — more intricate on the black turtle. Their faces and eyes were patterned with yellow. Their legs were patterned with red and yellow.

White Sox vs. Mariners — October 5, 1985

My wife and I and three friends went to Comiskey Park for the White Sox game against the Mariners. It was only 40 degrees out, and we froze.

It was fan appreciation night. The White Sox won 10-4.

Brewers vs. Yankees — September 10, 1985

My wife and I drove up after work with friends. We ate supper at the park, and the food was great.

Paul Molitor led off the bottom of the first with a single to center that Ricky Henderson misplayed into a three-base error allowing Molitor to circle the bases and score. The Yankees won 13-10.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Missouri

My wife and I visited Wilson’s Creek while on a summer vacation. The visitor center was very interesting. They had a topographical map on which the battle was replayed with lights indicating troop movements and batteries. We drove around the battlefield on the tour road. It was 95 degrees out, so we only got out of the car once — at the Ray House. This is the only building still standing that was there at the time of the battle.
