Cubs vs. Pirates — September 19, 1986

Two friends and I went to Wrigley Field. It drizzled off and on all day, and there were only 5,000 people in the park. But it was fun and relaxing. In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t keep score. The pre-steroid Barry Bonds went 0 for 5. The Cubs won 8-2.

Brewers vs. Royals — August 23, 1986

We went with friends to a Cubs/Reds game at Wrigley Field in the afternoon, then drove up to Milwaukee and saw a Brewers/Royals game at County Stadium in the evening. We sat in the Mezzanine Boxes, a narrow row of seats that hung from the upper deck and had a shelf in front of the seats to put food on.

At 8:54 pm, I participated in my first, and last, wave. When the wave came around, I stood up, threw my hands in the air, and came very close to knocking the light fixture on my head.

The Brewers won 8-4.

Cubs vs. Reds — August 23, 1986

We spent the day with friends. We arrived at Wrigley at 11:15, just in time for an Old-Timers Game. Our seats were in the third row in the bleachers in dead center. (This is the only time I’ve ever sat in the Wrigley bleachers.) Ronnie Woo-Woo was there in full voice, annoying us all.

During the game, this piece of ticker-tape blew out of the scoreboard and landed in my lap. It didn’t scan very well, but if I’m reading it correctly, the Padres were batting in the bottom of the third, leading the Phillies 2-0.

Animal #29 — Least Chipmunk

eutamias minimus

July 13, 1986 — 10:00 am

McNaughton, Wisconsin

I sat out on the deck and tried to get the chipmunks to eat out of my hand. I soon noticed the chipmunks came in two sizes. I checked a field guide and discovered I was looking at two different species. The larger, chubbier ones, with stripes that ended at a reddish rump, were Eastern Chipmunks. The smaller, skinnier ones with stripes that ended at the base of the tail were Least Chipmunks.

Both species were foraging for sunflower seeds that had fallen out of the bird feeders. They were on the deck, under the deck, and scuffling through the nearby grass and brush. The Red Squirrels would occasionally chase them.
