Zion, Illinois — Illinois Beach State Park

In 1987, I only went birding twice and only saw 87 birds the entire year. I hadn’t seen a lifer since 1984.

But once in a while, for old time’s sake, I’d call the Audubon hotline. For over a month, as many as 30 Red Crossbills were being seen at Illinois Beach. I kept telling myself I ought to go see them, and I finally found the energy. I had almost waited too long.

They were in the pines on the south end of the park. I arrived early and spent over an hour searching through the pines. My field guide told me to listen for the sound of cracking cones. Without this advice, I never would have found them. Three (an immature male and a pair) were quietly foraging in the top of the pines about 100 yards in from Lake Michigan and 20 yards south of the Dead River. They didn’t move around much and were very difficult to spot. They perched silently and made an occasional peck at nearby pine cones. At one point, the pair “kissed” each other.

Cubs vs. Mets — September 21, 1987

My friend and I drove down to Wrigley Field. We got to see Dwight Gooden pitch, but the game was very dull. There was an hour-long rain delay during which I toured the park. I wandered corner to corner in the last row of the upper deck. I also tried to get an ivy leaf, but couldn’t reach one. I had to settle for a chip of paint from the left-field foul pole. The Cubs lost 7-1.

McNaughton, Wisconsin — Spider Lake Road

I was walking with my daughter when I spotted this frog in the grass by the wood shed.

I grabbed it and put it in the birdbath. It hopped out immediately. I caught it again and held it in my open palm to show my daughter. It jumped down next to her on the walkway to the shed. She picked it up by the head and shook it. Only its legs and rear end were sticking out. She dropped it after a few seconds and it escaped through a crack in the walk.

McNaughton, Wisconsin — Spider Lake Road

I was walking though a white pine woods. The Wood Frog hopped out of the grass down into the rock garden. I caught it and put it in the bird bath by the porch where it sat for long enough for dad to study it. It then hopped out of the bath and under the wood shed.

It was tan with a dark brown ear patch that ended abruptly. It was about two inches long when sitting.

White Sox vs. Royals — May 27, 1987

I went to the game with my brother-in-law and two friends. At the park it was “No Crowd Noise Night,” or it seemed like it. We sang along with the organ, yelled at the players, and chanted “Harold, Harold” whenever Harold Baines came to bat. But for six innings, nobody else was making a bit of noise. The game was dull, but we had a great time. The White Sox won 3-2.
