Shiloh National Military Park, Tennessee

We spent the night in Corinth, Mississippi, then headed up to Shiloh in the morning to tour the battlefield. As we drove into the park along the entrance road, three Gray Foxes ran across the road and field in front of us. We first saw two of them as they ran across about 40 yards ahead of the car. I stopped, and they stopped, right at the edge of the woods. They looked at us for a moment, then disappeared into the trees. Just as I started up again, another one crossed in front of us and entered the woods.

Shiloh National Military Park, Tennessee

My family and I visited the battlefield early in the morning. We parked the car and walked along the Sunken Road to the Peach Orchard, close to where the fighting started.

This cabin is the only building still standing that was there in 1862. (But it wasn’t in this spot. There was a cabin on this spot during the battle, but it was destroyed.)

Our walk took us past Bloody Pond. During the battle, men from both armies crawled to the pond for a drink. So many dead and wounded ended up in the water that it was stained red. It isn’t an impressive body of water — slimy and muddy. I knew it was small, but I didn’t know it was this small.

The worst fighting took place in the Hornet’s Nest. The woods were, and are very thick. We only stopped a few more places and only I got out of the car. One of those places was the remains of the tree  under which Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnson died.

Battery Robinett — Corinth, Mississippi

We stayed the night in Corinth, Mississippi. There was a small park nearby with some remains of Civil War entrenchments, so we drove over to see what there was to see.

This next photo is a postcard.

The back of the postcard says: An attempt by the Confederates led by Col. William P. Rogers to retake Corinth took place at this site following the battle of Shiloh. Col. Rogers died after placing his regimental flag on the works. The Confederate Monument on the lawn of the Alcorn County Courthouse is dedicated to the bravery of this man.

White Sox vs. Rangers — June 4, 1988

My wife and I went to the game with friends. As we approached the ticket window, some lady handed us half-price coupons. That works! Our seats were down the left-field line in the upper deck. And fine seats they were too — about 10 inches wide and so close to the row in front that my knees didn’t fit.

The game was sloppy, and much of it was dull, but the last inning was fantastic. When the Sox came up to bat, they were losing 8-5. Ivan Calderon led off with a home run. Then, with one out, Gary Redus hit a walk-off grand slam to win it for the Sox 10-8. There was even a fireworks show after the game!

Cubs vs. Braves — May 25, 1988

I went to the game with three coworkers. It was cold, but we had fun watching the game. The Cubs lost 2-1.
