Marriott’s Great America Amusement Park — Gurnee, Illinois

By the time my final semester at college came along, I’d been thinking about starting a life list for a while. I hadn’t gotten around to it yet — downtown Chicago didn’t seem to offer a lot of opportunities — but I knew I’d start one someday.

On one of the final weekends before I graduated, I went to Great America with my girlfriend and two other friends.

A day at Great America involves a whole lot of standing in line. By 4:00 in the afternoon, I was pretty tired of it. We were standing in yet another line, this one for the Loggers Run water flume ride. The queue wound around the edge of a small pond, and I was bored.

I saw a male House Sparrow land on a rock in the middle of the pond not far from where we stood. I was familiar with the species, so identification was no problem. The bird was not exciting, but I decided that an amusement park was an amusing place to begin a life list. I thought to myself, “Number one.” There was no fanfare; I didn’t even tell my companions what I had done.

The bird flew off after a minute or so, the line moved on after an hour or so, and so it began.

Cubs Vs. Expos — April 22, 1979

I was at college at this time. Two friends and I took the Subway to the park and bought our tickets maybe an hour before game time — box seats behind the Cubs dugout. Note how empty the park was on a sunny, warm spring weekend.

The guy in the red shirt in the next photo is (I’m pretty sure) Lou Boudreau, Cubs’ broadcaster.

I have no idea what’s happening here. I don’t see a time on my scorecard when the Expos had two men in scoring-position. It’s entirely possible that I wasn’t paying attention and missed something. It’s even possible that these photos are from another game I went to while at college and not the one that I scored.

If this is the game I scored, this next photo must have been taken in the top of the eighth, when pinch-runner Tony Solaita scored from second on a single by Andre Dawson.

Cubs vs. Giants — May 30, 1974

Again, I have no memory of this game, just a scorecard made out in my handwriting. In May, 1974, I would have been 16. The Cubs won 5-3.

Cubs vs. Pirates — September 12, 1970

I don’t remember this game, and I have no details except a scorecard made out in my handwriting. The Cubs lost, 5-4.

Cubs vs. Phillies — August 29, 1963

From my sister’s diary:

Today we started out early and went to Chicago. First Dad met a friend at some fishing tackle place in town and then we ate lunch at Moody’s Sweet Shop. Later we saw the Cubs play the Phillies. Cubs won 2-1. Then we went to Evanston.

Some interesting stuff.

  • The Cubs right fielder was Lou Brock
  • The Cubs second baseman was Ken Hubbs. He came up late in 1961, won the Rookie of the Year award in 1962 and hit .235 in 1963. He died in a plane crash on February 13, 1964, less than six months after this game.
  • Both pitchers threw complete games. When was the last time you saw that happen?
