Sylvan Lake — Custer State Park, South Dakota
Five or six White-winged Juncos were feeding on the ground on a gravel trail from the parking lot to the lake. I was able to get within six feet of them to take these photos.
White-winged Juncos were once considered a separate species, but they were lumped with Dark-eyed Juncos about the time I started birding. Here’s hoping they get split off again someday.
