Kane County Cougars vs. Beloit Snappers

We went to the game with our good friends Dale and LuAnn, Cougar season-ticket holders and serious baseball junkies. The last time we were at a Cougars home game was April 13, 1991 — the first game the Cougars ever played. The park has changed quite a bit — grandstand seats and three outfield decks have been added. Our seats were behind the first-base dugout, 11 rows up. The park was perhaps half full, which meant there were 6,459 people in the park. What amazed me is that there were 6,413 (or so it seemed) places to buy food and they all doing a brisk business. We didn’t buy anything. Dale bought a cheeseburger on a stick.

It was obvious to me early on that very few people were there to see the game. There was a pregame tumbling exhibition by some local kids group, quizzes and drawings, and several between-inning races of one sort or another. The featured attraction of the night was Jake the Diamond Dog. He caught Frisbees between innings, retrieved bats and brought water to the umpires — when he could find the umpires. He wasn’t sure which of the people on the field was the umpire, so he wandered about forlornly, attempting to deliver water to anybody who would pay attention to him.

There was a game, but it was rather dull. It started at 6:35. There were a few great fielding plays and a few really lousy fielding plays. The Cougar second baseman muffed at least three ground balls and the Snappers pitcher threw two balls past the first baseman. The Snappers ended up winning 5-1. (Click here to see the box score.) Perhaps half the crowd stuck around until the end, around 9:35.

As you’ve probably figured out by now, I’ve fallen in love with the panorama feature that came with my camera. There’s always a bit of a time lapse with panorama photos. Notice in the second one that the Snapper’s base runner is on second base and not on second base. And in the third one, the home plate umpire is behind home plate and by the mound and the Cougars don’t have a shortstop.

Here’s Elfstrom Stadium from halfway down the third base line.

Here’s the view from our seats at dusk.

And here’s the same view near the end of the game.

Just before the game began, several Cougar players stood in front of their dugout and tossed plastic balls into the crowd. I tried to get them to throw one to me by raising my hands and saying “I’ll bet you can’t throw this far.” It didn’t work, but somehow LuAnn got her hands on one and gave it to us.

And … As we entered the park, we were handed envelopes. Both my wife’s and mine contained coupons for a free ticket to a game later this season. We aren’t planning on going again, so if you’re interested, feel free to make a bid. (The current bid for both seats is $1. Do I hear $2? Remember, it’s a $20 offer.)

County Fair Tractor Pull

This was the first tractor pull I’ve ever seen. Having seen one, I have just one question — Why would anybody see a second one?

Fortunately it was free. I sat in the bleachers for about 15 minutes experiencing the intense thrill that comes from watching a tractor slowly pull a trailer across a field. I went back an hour or so later and saw what appeared to be the same tractors pulling the same trailers across the same field. I poked my head in one last time an hour later and this time saw something totally different — what appeared to be the same tractor, slightly souped up, pulling the same trailer across the same field, this time at a faster pace. It coughed up huge clouds of black smoke that drifted right through the bleachers. I left immediately. Yahoo. I couldn’t help wondering how much gas was being used at $4.05/gallon.

This is a time-lapse panorama — the same tractor appears three times.

And because I know you want to share the excitement …

This one didn't win.

County Fair Food

I made a point of only buying food that wasn’t normally available except at a fair.

Decisions, decisions

Jumbo Corn Dog ($5) — This was tasty, but I soon ran into a problem. Because the stick was so long (and very sharply pointed), I got to a place where I could no longer eat off the end. Which left me with a choice. I could either eat around the stick (the corn on the cob method), which would be sloppy, or I could try to push the dog up the stick (risking having it crumble and fall). Which method would you have adopted?

Corn on the Cob ($3) — It was very tasty, but it lacked that scorched, smoky taste that makes the corn at the Wisconsin State Fair so awesome.

Root Beer — They had a variety of “home made” drinks. I had to buy a mug (for $6), but I could sample as many flavors as I wanted before getting the mug filled with the drink of my choice. (Refills were $2, but the mug was so large I was satisfied with one.) I tried the birch beer (too sweet) and the sarsaparilla (and yes, that’s how you spell it), but that was rather dull. I went with the root beer, and wasn’t disappointed, although it didn’t quite match the best of Dog n Suds.

County Fair Livestock Auction

I spent the afternoon alternating between wandering about and sitting in the auction barn watching the auctioneer sell cattle, pigs and sheep. The highest price for beef (while I was in the barn) was $5.10/lb. The champion hog went for $30/lb.

The animals were all shown by kids between about 8 and 20. I saw one small girl, perhaps about 13, whom I thought was very courageous. She dragged in a steer that was at least 16 times heavier than she was. Just as she got it onto the floor, it tossed its head and smacked her right across the face. She didn’t flinch, but went about yanking the stubborn animal back and forth. It was only as she was leaving the floor after the animal had sold that she put her hand up to her face and wiped away a tear.

Later in the afternoon there was another auctioneer at the podium. He spoke even faster and was less understandable.
