On Being a Cubs Fan

The Cubs, who led the National League in wins,  just lost the first round of the playoffs, dropping three games in a row to the Dodgers. They were outscored in the series 20-6. My brother-in-law in Arkansas e-mailed me to ask what it feels like to be a Cubs fan now. I said, “The same as it always has.” And, just for the record — I’ve had this post queued up on my blog for about two weeks now.

I think I might be feeling more pain if the Cubs had actually showed up for the postseason. As it was, I was able to go to bed in the fifth inning during each of the last two games because it was clear that nothing good was about to happen.

I’m done. I will waste no more time on this year’s team. I hope they get rid of Derrick Lee while he still has some trade value, and I hope they send Fukudome to play winter ball. I hope Mark Cuban buys the team and builds a stadium in Schaumburg and changes the name to the Chicago Wind (or something) and gives them different-colored uniforms to wear.

And when next season rolls around, I’ll watch the games because I’m a fan and I like baseball. But I’ll turn off the TV a little sooner and I’ll invest a little bit less emotional energy and I’ll expect even less.

Hey, the Bears are in 1st place!
