Triple XXX

I stopped here with coworkers on the way home from a conference a couple years ago and was impressed enough to want to take my wife. We stopped in on a stormy afternoon.

The official name is Triple XXX Family Restaurant. It calls itself Indiana’s oldest drive-in. It began as one of the “thirst stations” for a brand of beverage manufactured in Texas. Only two of the stations still exist — this one and one in Washington state. The root beer is tasty, not as creamy as Dog n Suds or A&W, but not bitter either.

As we walked in, we saw the “cash only” sign on the door, which limited how much we could buy. As it was, I had to walk back to the car and scrounge up $1.50 in change to leave a decent tip.

On neither of my visits have I been brave enough to order the cheeseburger with peanut butter on it.

Violent storms were predicted just to the south, and we had earlier driven through a corner of one that made driving very dicey for a couple minutes. This was the view of West Lafayette from our stools in the restaurant.
